ENVIRONMENT
Equatorial submitted its Sustainable Development Charter to the ROC Government in December 2010 and has been working closely with the Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Economic Forestry and Environment, regional departmental authorities as well as local community leaders and companies to ensure stakeholders are aware and supportive of the Company’s development plans and that operations are carried out with transparency and respect for the various stakeholder needs.
Equatorial has partnered with local environmental consulting firm EcoDurable to carry out environmental monitoring and management during exploration, with permanent representatives now active on site at Mayoko.
SRK Consulting (UK) Ltd and Genivar, together with Ecodurable, are conducting Scoping studies for the ESIA for the proposed mining project in the coming months.
In October 2011 Equatorial’s environmental consultant team conducted a 10 day site visit which included the proposed port site, rail corridor and mine site, to prepare a Stakeholder Engagement Plan and the ESIA Scoping Report.
COMMUNITY
Equatorial is engaged in a broad range of community development initiatives in Mayoko and the surrounding regions. The Company published its Employment Charter and Corporate Values Statement in Mayoko to promote and foster transparent and equitable human resource practices and safe working conditions for its staff and has a highly experienced Community Liaison Officer based full time at Mayoko.
Equatorial continues to progress a number of community development programs, a number of these initiatives have been recognized in national newspapers.

- Rehabilitation of the Mayoko water supply including servicing the generator, pump and pipeline and repairing the sterilization circuit, with water now running through the village 24/7;
- Further provision of educational materials to primary schools in Mayoko and the surrounding villages;
- Upgrading of roads and drainage systems throughout the Mayoko village and surrounding areas;
- Upgrading of the Mayoko football pitch and the provision of equipment to two local teams;
- Support for the local festivals including Labour Day, Youth Day and Independence Day;
- Assisting with the installation of a new Customs office at Mayoko; and
- Refurbishment and re-commissioning of the local airstrip for use by all companies in the region including emergency charter operators for medevac purposes
